Vena Cava

Vena Cava hails itself “the hippest winery in Mexico” with good reason - it probably is. Former sailors who had traveled around the world by boat, Phil and Eileen Gregory purchased 70 acres of land in the heart of the Valle de Guadalupe in 2002. By 2005, they had built a winery based on organic farming and sustainability in all facets of its operation. The winery itself is built into the side of a hill and is built entirely out of recycled materials. Old boats were taken out of Ensenada harbor and given a second life as the roofs of the various wings of the winery. Being entirely underground greatly reduces energy costs because the entire facility is, itself, a temperature controlled cellar. Vena Cava will never be a huge winery; quality is far more important than quantity to Phil Gregory. It is a true boutique winery, producing approximately 2,000 cases per year in total, but with many of the wines only having production of 100-200 cases. Vena Cava has fully embraced social media, and their Instagram page shows wonderful shots of their wines and vineyard. If you were to travel to the Valle de Guadalupe, you could stay at their 6 room hotel, La Villa de Valle and eat at their farm-to-table restaurants Corazon de Tierra - Heart of the Earth.
